i wish i had some arrogant bastard ale :(

wow.

I just got off the phone, and I can only blame myself for answering it. See, we've been getting calls from some generic TOLL FREE CALL (888 858-9823) number for a while, and generally it's a bill collector with a wrong #.

So I answered, and it turns out it's some Bank One person trying to pimp their protection plan. Now when I say pimp, I mean reach out through the phone, grab your jaw, yank your head back, and try to cram it down your throat like it's your first night in jail.

I mean every smooth, like "all we ask is that you give it a try for 30 days and notify us if you want to cancel"...no mention at all of cost. All they talk about is how it'll help me by being able to defer a payment once a year, or suspending payments in a medical emergency. I had to say 3 times specifially that I don't want anything added to my card.

I'm to polite...thats my problem, should have just hung up on these calls like I always do. Lesson learned...if it's important they'll leave a message. No more pavlovian answering the phone for me.

- VW spoof or subversive advertising campaign? Either way pretty damn funny. Suicide bomber in a VW.
- Scottish sobriety test.

Thanks for the tip that this is a Bank One Rep, now I know not to answer the call.

Happy to help

These people have been calling me at work a few times a month for the last year, but I've never answered it. My caller ID shows "MUSKEG MT AB" in the display. I search for the number and name everytime they call, but this is the first time I found anything. Thanks! I'll get you Bank One!!!

thanks for the tip... i googled the 888-number that's been popping up on my caller ID every day and found your page, you saved me from a nightmare! i don't handle those calls well either...

Again, thanks for putting the phone number in your post. I get these calls a lot, and I answer them most of the time, and there's never anyone there. Glad to know who it is...

Phone # attached to an out of country (Alberta)business. Is the one way to get around the National "No Call" List?

Posted by: on February 20, 2005 05:54 PM

Thank you!! I am so sick of these marketing calls regardless of whether I have their product or not. Hopefully a lot more people look up this number this way and see your site. I have one better than just ignoring the calls that come twice a day that come at the absolute worse times. When they call and start trying to "add protection", tell them to hold on a minute, and then put your phone down...in front of the TV (really loud), in front of your screeming kid, the vacuum cleaner...? Maybe the calls will stop. Even if they try again, I bet the second time you do it they'll stop calling. Happy harrassing!!!!

I've been getting incessant -- one, two a day -- calls from the same damned 888 number, never leaving a message, and even when I answer the phone with the intention of telling them off...nobody on the other end. Gah.

Well, at least I know what to expect if they ever get all chatty. Thanks for the heads-up. (Googled the number and found this entry -- very helpful! Thanks again!)

Kudos to you and caller ID. Finally I have found out who keeps calling. We are on a Texas no-call list but we do have an account (paid in full each month) with Bank One, therefore the calls from Bank One. I do not answer calls with "800's" but was curious. Thanks for the info... I'm not the only one that appreciates you.
It's little things that helps all of us during our every day lives. THANKS

I'm glad it helped a bit.

Posted by: Dennis Judd on February 22, 2005 11:38 AM

I also found this thread by Googling the phone number. Thanks for the info about who the caller is. They've been calling for weeks (maybe months) but I don't answer. I wonder if I answer and tell them to stop calling if they will. I have a Bank One credit card, so I guess they're allowed to call me. Unfortunately, with the recent bank mergers Bank One owns a lot of credit cards that used to come from separate banks.

As I was filing a complain with the State of Kentucky Distric Attorney regarding this calls from MUSKEG MT AB, I was looking for this company adress in google and your web blog came in as a result. I have read some of your comments and I am not really glad that I haven't beent he only one, but one of many, so I decided to include your web blog in my complain. I have a "Telemarketing No Call List" here in Kentucky and I hope to have this issue resolved. Now I can tell you that I called the number and according to this company they were looking for a Julie McCoy and as I asked them to repeat her phone number back to me, it didn't even come close to mine so I told them that they were being reported to the Distic Attorney and that I didn't wish to be called again. The person re-acted so rude and yelled at me showing me her un professional behavior, but at least I know that this company will be getting a call from my state attorney demanding an explanation or even the ten grand fine. You guys should do the same, report this issue to your state attorney and we'll see how long they last.

Posted by: Freeminded 1974 on February 28, 2005 12:42 PM

I have filed with the National Do Not Call list regarding this company Please do the same by joining it. https://www.donotcall.gov/default.aspx and look for your state donnot call registry to do the same.

I have been getting the calls almost daily from this 888 number. When I answer, no one is there. I thought it might be some kind of scam to identify me to perpetrators of telephone or email spam. Googled the number (888-858-9823) and found your helpful comments.

I decided to dial the number and found some useful info on a pre-recorded message. Assuming it is not a hoax, I would suggest that anyone receiving these annoying calls do the same.

Dial the number. Select option to have your number added to do not call registry. Follow instructions all the way to the end, in order to properly complete the automated process. Their system will say "goodbye" when it is done. Good luck!

Posted by: Maddog on March 9, 2005 12:03 AM

Thank you, Maddog(and all)! I too (like many) googled the annoying 888 number and found this site. I took your advice to call the 888 number and chose option "5" to be added to Chase's Do Not Call registry. Hopefully the calls will quit very soon. (They say that it takes up to 30 days to go into effect.)

I've been getting calls from 1-888-858-9823 about twice a night for I don't know how long. I have an unlisted number, so I guess my "temporary" roomate called Bankone's toll-free number from my phone. When somebody does that, the person with the toll-free account gets a list on their bill of all the numbers (unlisted or not) that have called the toll-free number. Having read your blog entry, I see that somebody has traced the number down to an Alberta, Canada source. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but folks, there's absolutely NOTHING you can do about this type of annoyance call because the "do not call" list only applies in the U.S.
Heck, I don't even USE credit cards and never have so the calls are a waste of THEIR time as well as mine. The jerks who're doing the calling never are on the other end of the line EVEN WHEN I PICK UP THE RECEIVER MIDWAY THROUGH THE FIRST RING!!! QWest is absolutely NO help to me whatsoever: "Telemarketing is legal and is an effective strategy for advertising products and services..." so about all any of us can do is to send a letter to our overpaid, bribe taking and totally incompetant congressperson asking for some kind of legislation. And doing this is about as effective as whizzing into the wind. Other than that, you could terminate your land line account and go to a cell phone, but it's just a matter of time before telemarketing infects that method of communication.

Just did the same google search for the same number and came with this. Great Info. Will take action ASAP.

Thanks for the.

BTW, I've been getting calls 5 -6 times a day. Location Gainesville Fl.. Total BS

I found this blog after googling the number and called and requested to be put on the do not call list (thanks!). But starting today, the calls are coming in by the hour. I finally picked up the phone, and yelled at the poor woman who agreed to put me on the do not call list. Let's see if that helps or if the calls start coming in on the half-hour.

Posted by: Diane on March 31, 2005 10:31 AM

I'm also getting these annoying calls here in Colorado Springs. Was curious then did the google thing and found this blog. I'm trying to decide whether to ignore the number, answer and do the extended hold trick, or yell at the salesman or what. We'll see, but I'm glad I found this!

Thanks for the info re: the company's do not call registry. I have only received one call but checked it out in Google, which led me to your page. I have called and added my number and also heard that it may take up to 30 days to go into effect. Something that may be helpful for you to know is that if the calls do continue, you need to tell the telemarketer upfront that you are not interested in speaking with them and do not want to be called again. By law, they must stop calling you immediately, no 30 day waiting period. So pick up the phone, get it over with and spare yourself the annoyance!

Posted by: Shelby Davison on April 5, 2005 05:29 PM

I just called the number to add my number to the do not call list. They have changed the bank to Chase and the process is now lengthier with two verifications. It sounds like an attempt to have you hangup before the process has completed. Stay on the phone until the system says goodbye.

I'm so used to getting calls from JAK Productions posing as yet another charity that when I got a call today from 888-858-9823 I fully expected it to be another JAK spam call. Wow, I was wrong. I found your Website but called the number anyway (*67 first) and the recording was for Chase Credit Cards. Hmmm...what's really going on here? I've filed a complaint on the DNC list anyway, we've had our number on that list from the first day you could sign up for it!!

Posted by: DontAnswerthePhone on April 7, 2005 08:19 PM

I've been getting daily calls from 888-858-9823, too. Thanks to Google and finding this page, I figured out that I needed to talk to BankOne.

I first called BankOne's customer support # at 1-877-226-5663 and asked to be removed. The CSR was pleasant, but didn't know how to do that, and after a few minutes on hold, she gave me the number to BankOne's Privacy Center.

I called the Privacy Center # at 1-888-868-8618 and asked that my phone number be placed on their do-not-call list. The person took the information and gave me a confirmation number. She said it takes up to 30 days to process the request.

So, hopefully, no more daily calls from them!

As with the others, thanks for the info. I have been getting a call for the last couple of yrs and when I answer it, they hang up. Thought it was an old co-worker stalking me....as I said its been occuring for about 3 yrs and I'm too cheap to Star 69 each time to find out who it was. The difference tonight was that they called around 8.30 tonight (normally its around 7.30). Since 8.30 is alittle late for prank calls, even for a stalker, I called the telephone company who stated that the only way to find out who the caller was, was to Star 69 (guess they have to make money somehow). Starred 69 to make the phone company happy and got the same 888.858.9823 as everyone else (then Googled that number and found a Gambling site and this one). I called Chase to ask them whay I would be getting a hang up call from an automatic system, and then for me to have to request for that system not to call me anymore (Interest payments hard at work...no wonder they have to charge 21%). They wouldn't even talk to me until I could prove who I was, since my home phone didn't match what was in their records, but that's another story. The CS Rep told me that "The Do Not Call Registry" system is a new system and she was not aware of any quirks in it, but would pass the info to the IT dept. So at least one mystery is solved, the hang ups for the last couple of months. Just have to figure out who has been doing it the last couple of yrs.....I guess it is back to the old co-worker theory.

Yes, thank you for making it so I could find out about this by punching the numbers into Google. And thanks to those with info on "do not call." Since I have Vonage, I figured I'd post the call log showing their latest calls...

Unbelievable. I was worrying that these could be very important, because calling at 9 pm is way beyond intrusive. I recently got a credit card through them, and when I called to activate it (hmmm, my phone number is new and those calls started coming right after activating the card) I got the 'sledgehammer' too. It seemed like 'no' was barely an option, like "No thank you" / "Awww, come on!" / "No thanks" / "I'll be your best friend!" So I had actually turned down the service, and now they're calling me to try to push it on me still. BIG business.

Just a heads up... Bank One and Chase are merging so that's where some confusion comes in.

What I don't understand is why when you google the number, a whole bunch of gambling ads come up.

Posted by: Joel on April 21, 2005 10:54 PM

I've been getting these same calls, your page came up as the first result in a search for the numbers, go figure. Thanks for the heads up.

Posted by: Carlos on April 26, 2005 11:21 AM

All you have to do is interupt them saying "please put me on your do not call list" try it! They have to stop with the sales pitch! They always do! (so far) You will be surprised how their attitude changes!

Posted by: David on May 2, 2005 02:34 PM

Thanks, I googled that bad number. I will not answer. Let it call.
