CASE MOD #3: Silver Pen Camouflage
So the last mod I did was a Stealth CD mod...only problem was I later upgraded to a new CD-R and DVD, so all my work was pretty much rendered useless. Oh well, just another chance to do some more work on my computer while drinking :) So in the [H] forums I've seen some people post about using a silver pen to match add-ons to their aluminum cases, the only problem was there weren't any step-by-step guides for it. Now I know if you can't do this you should work at burger king, but I figured what the hell....besides it took me going to 3 different stores to find the stupid pen....*grrr*
So here are the pics of the case before, I thought the black would look better than the beige.....I guess I was wrong, it looked like crap, and the floppy didn't help matter any either.
So here's the stupid pen I had to start a quest to find, finally got it at Target for like 5 bucks (Stock # 081020080). It came with a gold one, but as you can guess I have no use for that. I bought two packs but one pen was enough for 2 CD roms and 1 floppy.
As you can see I took off the faceplates, if your gonna do this you should be able to figure out how to do that yourself. One word of advice though, when your putting the silver on, try to aim for one coat, and do about one centemeter at a time. And follow the lines on the plastic, as you can see in the 3rd pic I did little sections and stopped where the edges met. That way when you meet up again with the first coat there won't be any obvious lines. Also the nice thing about the pen was that it filled in the raised surfaces nicely, like where it says DVD-ROM (like in pic 4).
Also, if your gonna do this right, then take the friggin' buttons out. This includes the led plastic also, now on the DVD it just popped out, but the CD-R had the stupid little things fastened, so I trimmed off the plastic, and then used my soldering iron to re-melt the plastic just a little bit when I put them back.
And here's the final pics above, i'm pretty happy with it, and it sure as hell looks a lot better, for only 5 bucks and about an 1 1/2 worth of time.
So we have:
I know this guide was stupid, but maybe it helped somebody :P
