I've been playing a game called Painkiller: BooH (battle out of hell) and the load times have been for crap. So I decided that it was finally time to upgrade my RAM from 512mb to at least 1gb.
I have a Dell Dimension 8300, 3.0Ghz....so after a little research I found it used
PC3200 Ram (400mhz front side bus, 184 pin, ddr). I went shopping and reading about this new type of ram (new to me anyways) and decided a few things.
Since the Dell already had two 256mb ram sticks, running in dual channel mode I would have to buy a matching pair of whatever type of ram I wanted. That means two more 256mb sticks, for a total of 1.0gb, or two more 512mb sticks for a total of 1.5gb.
Price aside, I decided to go with two 512mb sticks for a good reason. That way if my new ram and old ram doesn't get along, I won't be SOL and I can just use the new stuff for a total of 1gb.
So I ordered the
ram from Newegg, I'd like to say I did a whole lot of research, but really I just went for what was the best deal I could find in a quantity of two. I mean I did a lot of research...but only across the span of a few hours, not days or anything.
Anyways, I orded it Wednesday, and had it Friday (holy shit!
awesome). Finally installed it last night and got it running. Here are some pics of the Ram and case, etc:

Old Ram from Dell 8300 (factory Ram)

Ok so, the ram in the system was from the Dell Factory. Hynix 512mb (2x256mb) of 400mhz, pc3200, CL3 in dual mode, banks 1 and 2. So I orginally added the new PQI (also PC3200, only difference is it's CL2.5) to banks 3 and 4. The computer booted (latest BIOS btw) just fine, BUT here's the rub. The bus speed was 333mhz....not 400mhz?!? So I tried placing the new PQI ram in the first banks (1 and 2) and the old Hynix ram in banks 3 and 4. Still no joy.
The system booted, windows loaded, but what's better; More ram at a slower speed or Less ram at a faster speed?
I opted for the less ram (only 1.0gb) at a faster speed, but since I thought this might happen I'm not to upset. What i'll do is use the old ram to upgrade another computer from 256mb (pc2100) to 512mb (pc3200).
So there ya go...if you have a Dell Dimension 8300 w/ factory ram, heads up.
now i need to go paint the house....
