5861 power supply replacment

Even though the 5861 is no longer offered by SBC I figured I might as well get around to documenting the process for replacing and purchasing a new power supply for the Efficient 5861/ Cabletron 255 / Flowpoint 2200 (all the same product ...at least as the power supply goes).

If you need one order from Amperor.com, model AOF25-3030. Contact information:

Here's a picture of what I received when I ordered one:

Now why replace it? Two main reasons:
1. blinking green power light, signaling a power supply failure
2. the old power supplies made by Tiger were like little furnaces, ran very hot and that's why generally they fail.

So, anyways, you can either order one from Amperor or scavenge one from a spare unit. Regardless here's the very simple method for replacing it, that only requires a #1 phillips screwdriver, and a small flat head one to pry some stuff:

1. Flip the unit over, using the flat screwdriver carefully remove the adhesive backed rubber feet. Then use the phillips screwdriver to unscrew the 4 exposed screws. You do not need to track them, they are all the same length.

2. Flip the unit back over (making sure to hold it closed) and gently lift the top off the unit. It should offer no resistance. Place it aside and now you'll see the inside. It should be fairly obvious that the power supply is in the lower right hand corner:

3. There are 4 screws to remove in each corner of the power supply (red arrows in the picture) and 2 cables you need to remove (red circles in picture). The top cable usually comes off easily, but the lower one might need some gentle prying which I've included a picture of how I achieve this.

Now that you've got it out, simply reverse the process for installation of the new power supply. That's it, pretty simple.

One last general tip. When closing up the case the wires might offer some resistance due to your moving them. Don't worry about this as it's normal. Also, I always recommend when returning screws to their original threads in plastic that you turn the screw counter clockwise about a 1/4 turn until you feel it "pop" back into the original thread. That way you don't strip the plastic.

Thanks for this page Dennis - I have the same Router that has croaked due to power supply.

I'm looking at the Amperon Page, and not sure exactly which one I need - I'm also trying to figure out just what voltages should be on each pin - that would be apparent once I know exactly which power supply is needed.

Thanks if you can help with this.

A hearty well done to you sir!!

You opened the door to getting my flowpoint back on line!!

How did/do you use this device in your business.

I'm looking for a less expensive source a 3 or 4 static ip address. My Covad service is top notch never out in 6 years of service but costs $130 a month.

Anyway Big time shot of "approval of this stranger" to you.
