Of course the simplicity of chmod'ing the folder to 777 is somewhat out weighed by the tendancy for gallery 1.4 to orphan the pictures not found in it's database.
Why, oh why didn't they include an option to merge orphaned pictures back into the album?

I thought they did...In the admin menu, I believe there is an option to look for orphaned images. Have you tried that option?

yeah, there's an option for orphans, but it's only delete. It doesn't give you the option to do anything else with them.....go figure.
