Relays, Vista and routing loops oh my!
One of my neighbors (Tim) is rebuilding a motorcycle he got for free. A 1980 Yamaha sr500 I think that's been sitting for like 20 years. Well aside from the standard joys of having to rebuild the carb and replace any cracked seals there's always the worry of mouse damage. For some reason those little guys love to burrow into the air filters, and apparently chew wires.
Well, they completely stripped 2 wires from the turn signal auto auto shut off thingy, and chewed up a few others. Now I had no idea up to this point that wire insulation must be made out of recycled mouse food, because I cannot for the life of me figure out why they cleaned that thing end to end like it was corn on the cob.
So about an hour later, I had finished repairing all the wires using some heat shrink tubing, and all was pretty well (except for my getting a couple of wires reversed) and we hooked everything back up to make sure it worked.
Now, while I had been working on the electrical, Tim had been working on the fenders. So we had removed the rear fenders, disconnecting all the rear wiring. Keep that in mind, it will factor in later.
So anyways, we hook back up the turn signal canceller thing and they don't blink. They just stay on constantly....mocking me with their ever present glow. So of course I'm sure that I must have miswired something, or fried something or who knows what. So after some careful thought, I come to the conclusion that the flasher relay must have gone magically bad at the same time I was working on the whole system.
So we gutted the flasher....and of course it looks fine inside. So we hook it back up the box and start testing it with a multimeter...everything looks fine except for the fact that we've got it strewn apart. And wouldn't you know...can't find a damn thing wrong. Every thing's working like it should be, except of course for the blinking.
Tangent: Ever notice how when a bulb burns out in a car, the remaining turn signal blinks faster?
Well since we had the rear turn signals disconnected, the only side effect I expected was that the front's would just blink faster. Apparently however this is not the case....apparently, they don't blink at all. We finally hooked them up as a last ditch effort and low and behold they worked just fine. We had eviscerated the relay for no valid reason at all.....and then we drank some beer :)
Also, yesterday, I signed up to be a beta tester for Windows Vista. How freakin' cool is that? I can only hope that I get an acceptance email, but it helps to know somebody on the inside. I'm really jazzed about it. Makes me just want to go buy another cheap little computer to throw it on so I don't have to mess up my main machine.
